It's Iodine, and he'll recheck at between 1 week to 1 month (or possibly at the next routine trim), depending on the severity of the ulcer.

So I've watched a ton of these videos for the past week now, and I have a question: Is the reason that all these cows have such problems with their hooves that they are spending a lot of time standing inside, not moving very much, in their own muck? I feel like cows that spend more time in a field with plenty of room and dryer ground would have less problems?

The cows and bulls visited by the Hoof GP have no idea how good they have it! I was watching a TV show with my kids yesterday about a rural veterinary practice. The vet gets called out to see about a black Angus' sore hoof. I missed what was wrong exactly, but there is the bull with his back leg in the air, somewhat stabilized by a series of ropes. The poor bull looses his balance and soon falls over completely, leg still in the air. The vet "trims" the hoof with some nippers, applies some white powder (salicylic acid, I think) with some cotton and a wrap and calls it good. There is no attention paid to the other claw, no crush, no proper tools (knife or grinder) no iodine, and not a single block in this entire scenario. I'm thinking this is so sad, knowing there's a better way! You do great work Graeme!

Question. In cases like this why not have the vet remove the toe? That would seem the solution to help get the lowest pain and best result. This is an uneducated layperson’s opinion and I would love to hear what an experienced person thinks

  81. Raymond Higgins
    Raymond Higgins

I like looking at your videos, I know nothing about farming, my question to you is, why don't you wash the hoofs before you start grinding or cutting?

    1. Raymond Higgins
      Raymond Higgins
      Hace 16 días

@Jen Keep thank you, I was wondering

    2. Jen Keep
      Jen Keep
      Hace 16 días

He addresses this in other videos. Basically, extra water on every cow wastes time and is simply not necessary. It's dangerous because makes things muddy and slippery. (Imagine the pool after 60 cows!) Also, electrical equipment and water don't mix. With the first pass of the grinder, all the muck is gone. If he needs to take a good look at a repeat customer, he'll use a spray bottle, or a bucket and a sponge to see how things look before setting in.

Graham, I can’t help myself here. I love your videos. Discovered them about a year ago. When I heard you talking I wondered what the accent was. When I found out it’s Scottish, I did a happy dance. Spent 16 days in Scotland the previous August and September. Can’t wait to come back. So...I read the title of this video and did a double take...Fixing a rotting cows hoof and thought a “rotting cows” “hoof”?Then realized the cow had a rotting hoof. LOL I love the way you bring your little boys with you. They will learn a lot from you. They will miss that time when school becomes a priority.
